Food Friday, San Diego

Hey Everyone! As many of you know, I like to feature local businesses on my blog on Fridays!
So let’s get back into the swing of things with another FOOD FRIDAY post!
Today we are talking about an acai bowl from the Santee Coffee Corner.

Acai bowls have been trending in San Diego for about a year now… I see more and more smoothie/coffee spots offering to make and sell acai bowls now. Acai is known as a “superfood” from Brazil and it is ohhh so tasty and well deserving of the frequent buzz. Acai is a tropical fruit and it’s normally served in a bowl, rarely in a cup, which is why it’s generated the name “acai bowl.” It looks very much like ice cream or a sorbet, if you will, and let’s just say that it’s a healthier alternative as opposed to a bagel or a breakfast sandwich from McDonald’s, you’re catching my drift, right?

As you can see here, acai is blended into a really thick smoothie and it’s topped with oats and fruit, usually strawberries and banana, but I get mine without banana. At the coffee corner, they also add blueberries, blackberries, and coconut shavings! In most places that I’ve been to, you can add peanut butter to your bowl and at the coffee corner, it’s an additional .50. Since acai is from Brazil, it’s not very cheap. This bowl was $6.50 because I added the peanut butter and I’ve been to several other juice/smoothie bars here in San Diego and bowls vary between $6.50-$8.00, however, it’s very delicious and you are getting some fruit servings in, so it’s gotta be healthy!

The Coffee Corner in Santee sells 3 different sizes, a small is $4, medium is $6 (pictured above) and the large is $8. Here is their yelp– Coffee Corner  🙂

Now, I recommend that you go out and buy one of these if this looks interesting and appealing to you, however, I know many people may have a problem with the price tag. So, if you’re one who is obsessed with eating acai bowls, but it’s not very budget friendly, I am here to tell you that you can make these at home. If you’re interested, leave me a comment below and I’ll be sure to write up a blog post on a recipe for you!

As always, thank you so much for reading, I hope you found this post interesting and helpful. Please let me know if you’d like a recipe on how you can make one of these in the comfort of your home!
